FROM THE PASTOR (MARCH 14, 2010):
As if the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile weren’t enough; as if the racist pranks played out at UCSD weren’t disturbing enough, last week our community was rocked by the senseless and tragic death of a Poway High School Senior who simply went for a run along the shores of Lake Hodges. When she didn’t come home Chelsea King’s parents called the police and filed a missing person’s report. A search was begun immediately. Her locked car was found in the parking lot near the lake but there was no sign of Chelsea. Thousands of people came forth to search for her and everyone was praying and hoping that she would be found safe and sound. Sadly, that was not to be as her body was discovered a few days later in a shallow grave near the trail on which she had been running. Then, suddenly, the remains of 14 year old Amber Dubois, who disappeared while walking home from school and had been missing for more than year, were found miles from her home. We can’t imagine such an awful thing happening anywhere, much less here in our own neighborhood. We want to scream to heaven and yell at God and ask “WHERE WERE YOU?” like people have done throughout the ages. Emotionally spent, we fall into an exhausted heap and let our feelings pour out through our tears. How could such a thing happen? How could someone be so cruel and callous as to do this to another human being? Why do such bad things happen to good people? What is wrong with this world? There are no satisfactory answers to any of those questions. Pious platitudes don’t help comfort anyone. Blaming God might be a natural instinct but, really, it wasn’t God who caused it; and, no, God did not “will” Chelsea’s life to end as it did, anymore than He willed the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, or the idiotic and racist pranks at UCSD. Rather, God’s role in all of this is to do what mom and dad do when their children are hurting, confused, in pain. God picks us up and wraps His arms around us shielding us from any more hurt than we could possibly bear. It takes a child time to calm down, cease sobbing and then simply fall asleep in the loving arms of his mom or dad when being comforted. It will take us, God’s children, time to do the same. Natural disasters and senseless tragedies happen. An imperfect natural world causes tectonic plates to shift and earthquakes happen. Bad people hurt other people; and good people respond with goodness. Good people respond with prayer, with their silent presence, with their solidarity, with their offering to help in any way they can. Good people remember God and, while not “preaching” to those in pain simply let the witness of their lives speak for themselves. Today is Laetare Sunday – “To Rejoice!” Sunday. We might not feel like rejoicing right now, but we rejoice because we are halfway on our journey to Easter. We rejoice because what we see good people do in tragic times reminds us that Jesus came to be one with us, suffered His passion and death for us and opened the gates of paradise for us. “REJOICE” even though you might not feel like it. After the pain and agony of Good Friday came the hope of Easter Sunday.
SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT: This note was found on the body of a small child who had died at Ravensbruk concentration camp at the end of World War II: “O Lord, remember not only the men and women of goodwill, but also those of ill will. Do not remember all the suffering they inflicted on us; remember the fruits we have bought, thanks to this suffering – our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, our courage, our generosity, the greatness of heart which has grown out of all this. And when they come to judgment, let all the fruits that we have borne be their forgiveness.” How do I account for this incredible act of forgiveness for these camp victims? How may God be calling me to emulate it?
